Oak
I wrote and recorded Oak in lockdown in my Brooklyn apartment over the course of April and May of 2020. I started recording it only 2 weeks after releasing Roll off your back and wanted to do something completely different. I missed the chemistry of playing music with my friends in a room creating organically based around feelings. Even though I was alone and limited to only my own brain and ideas I wanted to feel something as close to that as I could. I purposefully limited myself to guitar, bass and drums and wrote and recorded each instrument separately and the entire album in two large chunks splitting each track up later in the mixing process. Nothing can match the creativity born in collaboration but overall happy with how this came together.
Roll Off Your Back
After a two year whirlwind of events, in late March of 2020, I found myself with an unusually large amount of free time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I had been noodling around and sketching out songs in my spare for the two years prior but decided to throw them all away and spend all day everyday for 3 weeks straight writing and recording “Roll Off Your Back”. I focused a lot on juxtaposition of organic acoustic sounds and wacky or harsh synth sounds and had a lot of fun with it. I wasn’t sure I was going to release it but once it was done it felt like the perfect start to this project.
The final track, “If I Could Only Fly”, is a Blaze Foley cover.
